Laurence Hill Laurence Hill

Associate Vice President for Research and for National Laboratories

The Associate Vice President for Research and for National Laboratories at the University of Chicago is responsible for site office operations, University contract management, and Board staffing for Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Strengthening scientific collaboration among Fermilab, Argonne and the University of Chicago is also an important objective of this position.

Previously, Hill was Assistant Dean for Research Operations in the Division of the Biological Sciences (BSD) and the Pritzker School of Medicine, where his most recent responsibilities included overseeing and coordinating Divisional offices of Research Services, Shared Research Facilities, Research Program Planning and Development, and Clinical Research and serving as the Operations Project Executive for the Howard T. Ricketts Regional Biocontainment Laboratory at Argonne. From 2004 to 2006 Hill served as Assistant Dean for Planning in the BSD and played key staff roles in the creation of the Institute for Genomics and Systems Biology, the Ludwig Metastasis Center and the Howard Hughes/Janelia Farm Graduate Training Partnership.

Hill has an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, an M.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Chicago Divinity School, and a B.A. from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Carol Zuiches Carol Zuiches

Associate Vice President for Research, and Director, University Research Administration

Carol Zuiches is the Associate Vice President for Research Administration and Director of University Research Administration at The University of Chicago.  Her principal responsibilities at the University of Chicago include administration of all government and other sponsored research; overseeing the University’s compliance with Federal regulatory research requirements including conflict of interest, human subjects and scientific integrity.  She works with other senior University administrators involved with Federal and state relations to develop and represent the University’s concerns and positions in areas of research policy and funding.

Zuiches is the institutional official for the University’s Federal-wide Assurance, manages the individual conflict of interest disclosure process for the University, and works closely with other senior university officials to assure that the University meets all expectations for compliance in areas related to its research mission.

Zuiches’ professional activities include membership in National Council of Research Administrators, Society of Research Administrators and Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research, and the Association of University of Technology Managers and co-chair of FDP federal contracts task force.

Previously, Zuiches was Assistant Vice Provost for Research and executive director of the University of Washington’s preaward sponsored programs office (OSP). Prior to her position with University of Washington, Zuiches held positions of increasing responsibility at Washington State University. Zuiches earned her B.S. in General Science from the University of Portland and her Master’s in Education in Educational Leadership (Higher Education Administration) from Washington State University.

Michelle Terry Michelle D. Terry

Director, Operations and Education Programs

Michelle has overall responsibility for effective management of the office (e.g., fiscal, personnel, facilities, etc.). In addition, Michelle facilitates, develops, and assesses research-related educational outreach, including oversight of the Science and Technology Outreach and Mentoring Program (STOMP). Finally, Michelle participates in the development and implementation of outreach and education programs at Argonne.

Michelle has a B.S. in secondary education from The University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. She is currently enrolled in the Learning and Organizational Change Master’s Program in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. In 1987, she began her education career in administration at The University of Chicago in Admissions and Financial Aid at the Graduate School of Business. After completing the full-time GSB program, she worked for Baxter Healthcare as a senior global marketing manager. More recently, Michelle was a middle school Spanish teacher and Director of Service-Learning (pre-K through eighth grade) at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka, IL.

Alan Thomas Alan Thomas

Director, Office of Technology and Intellectual Property (UChicagoTech)

Alan Thomas is the Director of the Office of Technology and Intellectual Property (UChicagoTech) at the University of Chicago. His previous work experience includes directing licensing activities at ARCH Development Corporation, formerly the licensing and business development arm of the University of Chicago; technology transfer and business development for the Institute for Applied Colloid Technology, a German-based technical consultancy and licensor of technology to the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry; Business Development Manager for Nanophase Technologies Corporation, a venture-backed ARCH start-up, now public (Symbol: NANX), in the area of ultrafine powders based on technology from Argonne National Laboratory; and chemical engineering with ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) in the U.K.

Alan has an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from University College London, an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, and is a Chartered Chemical Engineer.

Fred E. StaffordFred E. Stafford

Consultant

Fred serves as a consultant for conceptualization and preparation of center-type, multi-disciplinary, multi-investigator, career development proposals, or graduate fellowship applications.

Fred Stafford came to the University of Chicago from the National Science Foundation where he spent 12 years as the founding program director for the Solid State Chemistry Program. A hallmark of this program is its cross-disciplinarity and collaborations. Prior to that, he spent 14 years on the chemistry faculty, and a member of the Materials Research Laboratory, of Northwestern University.

Fred received his Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley, and his A.B. from Cornell University. The French government has accorded him the rank of Chevalier dans l'ordre des Palmes Académiques. He has served as vice-chair of the board and chair of the Long Range Planning Committee of the Board for the Chicago Unit, Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic.

Lisa La Vallee Lisa La Vallee

Senior Publicist

As Senior Publicist Lisa La Vallee provides internal and external communications support to the Office of the Vice President for Research and for National Laboratories.  Her responsibilities include overall communications planning and execution, writing and editing, event planning, website development and public relations.

La Vallee joined the University in January, 2006.  Her previous work experience includes overseeing North American internal communications, public relations and analyst relations for T-Systems, a $10 billion division of Deutsche Telekom; directing marketing and communications for information technology service provider, Nuclio Corporation; and product management, marketing and internal communications for SBC (now AT&T).  La Vallee received her B.A. in English with a writing emphasis from Santa Clara University and her M.S. in Integrated Marketing Communications from Northwestern University.

Chicago Media Initiatives Group

The Chicago Media Initiatives Group (CMIG) supports the University's research and educational activities by helping to communicate those activities within and outside the University. CMIG assists University units and faculty to get started on new media projects, from simple Web communications plans to more complex publishing/pedagogical initiatives.

One of its activities is Research at Chicago. This Web initiative for the Office of the V.P. for Research and for Argonne National Laboratory provides video interviews, lectures, news stories, and multimedia presentations to share the knowledge of research findings from the University to the community.

Persons preparing proposals that require outreach and knowledge transfer components might wish to consult with CMIG early on. CMIG can provide a full range of solutions for an outreach plan ranging from Web sites to streaming video.
