Organizational Units
The University's primary research units include four divisions (Biological Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences), and six professional schools (Graduate School of Business, Divinity School, Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies, Law School, Pritzker School of Medicine, and the School of Social Service Administration). Faculty for the undergraduate College and the Graham School of General Studies, which are primarily teaching units, are drawn from the divisions and the schools. The administrative heads of the divisions and schools are the deans.
The University's institutes and centers facilitate interdisciplinary research. They draw their faculty from the departments, often from two or more divisions or schools, and from outside research organizations such as the Field Museum or Argonne National Laboratory.
- Institutes engage in research and advanced instruction; they do not recommend candidates for degrees.
- Centers are formed for specific research or teaching purposes and cease to exist when their mission is completed. Joint centers with other institutions include the joint University-Argonne centers.
Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne)
Argonne is a multi-purpose science laboratory of the Department of Energy managed by UChicago Argonne, LLC, a separate organization dedicated to the management and operation of Argonne with University of Chicago as the sole member.
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab)
Fermilab: Fermilab is a single-purpose science laboratory of the Department of Energy managed by Fermi Research Alliance, LLC, a partnership between the University of Chicago and Universities Research Association, Inc. (URA).
